BIO

BIO and RESUME
I wanted to be a painter. After studying art at Bennington College, I moved to New Mexico to make paintings in an adobe studio in the desert; the solitude, however, left me restless, and so I came home to New York City. Interested in building, I got a job working as a site manager for a construction company in Tribeca. The process of tearing industrial spaces down to their skeletons, then reconfiguring them with a new architectural vision struck me as the embodiment of art in practice. Around that time, a playwright friend asked me to design and build sets for plays he was producing on Ludlow Street, the home of an underground theater scene that has since given way to the boutiquing of the Lower East Side, but then gave voice to burgeoning theater artists. Exhilarated by the collaborative aspects of theater, I immersed myself in the world I had been raised in. According to my mother, actor Kathleen Chalfant, I was born during rehearsals of Major Barbara. My father, a filmmaker and photgrapher documented the formation of hip-hop in the early eighties, bringing me to B boy contests where I would watch on, rapt at the spectacle and the thrill of the performance (and possibly taking note of the linoleum the dancers spun on).

Andromache Chalfant is a set designer for theater and opera. She attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts where she trained with Paul Steinberg, John Conklin and Susan Hilferty, earning her Masters Degree in Set Design.

In 2006 she collaborated with Mark Wing-Davey on the premiere of Jose Rivera's School of the Americas for The Public Theater. She has been nominated 2 times for a Henry Hewes Award for Outstanding Set Design. Other New York credits include designs for Playwrights Horizons, Second Stage Theater, The Public Theater, MCC Theater, New York Theater Workshop, The Vineyard, Gotham Chamber Opera and The Play Company. In 2009 she collaborated with director/choreographer Doug Varone on Charles Gounod's Faust for Minnesota Opera. Other regional credits include designs for The Old Globe, American Repertory Theater, McCarter Theater, Minnesota Opera, Opera Omaha, Opera Boston, Virginia Opera, Arena Stage, Westport County Playhouse, Kansas City Repertory, Hartford Stage, Actors Theater of Louisville and The Williamstown Theater Festival.

Andromache has collaborated with such theater artists as Les Waters, Trip Cullman, Evan Cabnet, Danny Hoch, Jose Rivera, Sarah Ruhl, Rinde Eckert, Zelda Fichandler, Liesl Tommy, Moises Kaufman, Brian Mertes and Blind Summit Theater director Mark Down. She is a company member of Labyrinth Theater Company and an associate artist for The Civilians based in New York. She has been a guest lecturer at Sarah Lawrence and NYU Playwright's Horizons Theater School and will be teaching set design at Bennington College this Spring.

Upcoming projects include Through The Yellow Hour written and directed by Adam Rapp at The Rattlestick Theater, A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Sam Helfrich at Virginia Opera.

Andromache lives in Brooklyn with her husband and their daughter.
